The History of Sealeys Springworks

Sealeys Springworks is one of the oldest solely family owned and operated business in the Limestone Coast Region. The business was established in 1916 in Casterton Victoria by current owner Jake Nicholson's Great Great Grandfather Alfred Sealey. Within a few years the business prospered and Alfred felt it was time to move to Mount Gambier and focus on the future. During the early years of Sealeys majority of the work was basic Blacksmith style work as well as suspension on horse drawn carts and early motor vehicles.

Alfred was lucky enough to father two keen boys who matured in to the business becoming passionate tradesmen, Max and Arch Sealey, who would take over ownership in 1957. The business operated in central Mount Gambier in James street for many years before moving to its current location in Tolmie street in the late 60's. During this time Arch Sealey was also the mayor of Mount Gambier for a number of years.

The 60s-80s was very busy period for the business, with a large amount of spring Manufacturing being completed in house to keep up with ever changing passenger vehicle and trucking markets with both being predominantly leaf sprung. Max Sealey's son Peter worked locally in a number of business before starting work within the family business and obtaining his trade. Peter and his wife Heather Sealey purchasing the business in 1984.

The business continued to develop, with a number of old air operated machines being replaced with hydraulic, belt driven units to gear driven, hand setting slowly minimised and improved with machine setting. A number of Peter and Heather family worked for them during their ownership. Two of their three daughters working in the office as well as their son in laws from time to time. Jake, Peters grandson started working at Sealeys in 2006 and on completion of his apprentership bought the business in 2011.

Jake becoming the forth generation in the family to take the reins. Over this period the business has expanded in to offering a number of different suppliers in the automotive and 4WD industry, continuing to supply and manufacture quality leaf springs and fittings, as well as much much more.
